HIV/AIDS for Pediatric and Maternal Health

Siaya County has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the country, particularly affecting women, pregnant mothers, and children. While adult care has expanded over time, pediatric HIV remains a persistent challenge due to late diagnosis, inadequate child-specific services, and stigma that prevents early treatment. The burden is further compounded by vertical transmission from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding-despite proven interventions.

What We Do

For over 24 years, our team has led innovative, community-centered efforts to combat pediatric HIV in collaboration with local partners and global agencies.

  • Pioneering Pediatric HIV Care
We co-established one of the first pediatric HIV testing and treatment programs in the region in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), utilizing specialized molecular biology techniques to support early infant diagnosis (EID).

  • Integrated Testing & Treatment
We provide diagnostic services for HIV-exposed infants using advanced molecular tools, link patients to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and support long-term care through clinical partnerships.

  • Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT)
Our programs offer HIV testing during pregnancy, maternal ART, and prophylactic care for newborns, reducing perinatal transmission.

  • Community Education & Support
We lead household- and school-based outreach, reduce stigma, promote testing, and support adherence to ART through counseling and follow-up.

  • Capacity Building
We train healthcare workers and Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) in pediatric HIV care, creating a sustainable care network across local communities.

Why It Matters

Without early diagnosis and treatment, children with HIV face rapid disease progression and high mortality – often before their second birthday. Our long-standing investment in pediatric HIV care has dramatically increased early detection, improved survival, and reduced stigma for thousands of children and families in Siaya. Through science-backed care and deeply rooted partnerships, we continue to close the gap in HIV management-ensuring that no child is left behind.

“Every child deserves a chance to grow up healthy-HIV should never take that away.”
