Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of parasitic and bacterial infections that disproportionately affect the world’s poorest communities. In Siaya County, these diseases thrive in areas with poor sanitation, unsafe water, and limited access to healthcare.

The most common NTDs in the region include:

  • Schistosomiasis (snail fever)
  • Soil-transmitted helminths (intestinal worms)

Though rarely fatal, these diseases cause chronic pain, disability, malnutrition, and social stigma, especially in school-aged children and women. NTDs silently erode productivity, learning ability, and quality of life-keeping communities trapped in cycles of poverty and poor health.

What We Do

Mass Drug Administration (MDA)

We collaborate with schools, health centers, and the Ministry of Health to distribute deworming medications such as albendazole and praziquantel during community MDA campaigns.

WASH Education for Prevention

Our team leads community workshops focused on improving hygiene, safe water use, and latrine practices to break the cycle of reinfection.

Health Screening & School-Based Outreach

We conduct school-based screenings for symptoms of NTDs, promote early treatment, and work with the community to identify high-risk students.

Training for CHWs and Healthcare Professionals

We train Community Health Workers (CHWs) and healthcare professionals to recognize NTD symptoms, refer children for care, and reinforce hygiene behaviors in their communities.

Research & Data Collection

In partnership with Kenyan and U.S. universities and global health organizations, we gather data on infection patterns to improve the targeting and effectiveness of NTD interventions in Siaya.

Why It Matters

NTDs may not always make headlines, but their long-term damage is devastating. Children miss school. Adults lose workdays. Entire families suffer under the weight of persistent, treatable infections.

Addressing NTDs is not just a health priority—it’s a development imperative. By improving awareness, access to treatment, and prevention strategies, we help communities reclaim health, dignity, and opportunity.

“NTDs are diseases of neglect—but we choose not to look away. Every child deserves to grow, learn, and live free from chronic infection.”
